When should I get help for depression and anxiety?

Everyone occasionally has anxiety. Feeling anxious triggers biochemical changes that energize your body to deal with a worrisome, threatening, or downright dangerous situation.

Normally, anxiety goes away as soon as the situation passes. But normal anxiety crosses the line and becomes a problem that needs help when you frequently or constantly feel anxious, or you purposefully change your daily life to avoid anxiety-causing circumstances.

Unlike anxiety, depression is never normal. If you have the blues, they lift before long and your mood improves. But if you feel sad or depressed for two weeks or longer, you have a mental health condition that won’t improve until you get help from the team at Ease Psychiatry.

What symptoms does anxiety cause?

There are several types of anxiety disorders, and each one has a defining set of symptoms. For example, generalized anxiety disorder causes excessive worry over many aspects of your daily life, while social anxiety occurs when you meet new people or you’re being watched by others.

As a group, all anxiety disorders cause symptoms such as:

  • Fear
  • Dread
  • Worry
  • Irritability
  • Nervousness
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Headaches
  • Stomachaches
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Rapid heartbeat

Anxiety can also lead to a sudden panic attack, causing symptoms like sweating and chest pain.

What symptoms does depression cause?

Depression causes several of the following symptoms:

  • Feeling sad, worthless, and hopeless
  • Losing interest in the activities you enjoy
  • Withdrawing from your partner, family, and friends
  • Feeling drained of energy
  • Eating more or less than usual
  • Gaining or losing weight
  • Sleeping more or less than normal
  • Having a hard time concentrating
  • Being unable to make decisions
  • Feeling irritable, angry, and anxious
  • Thinking about suicide

Depression frequently causes physical symptoms. For example, you may have chronic joint, back, or muscle pain.

How are depression and anxiety treated?

Depression and anxiety are both treated with therapy, medication, or in some cases, both. After talking with you and diagnosing depression and/or anxiety, your provider creates a treatment plan that fits your personal needs.

The team has extensive experience using different therapeutic approaches that target your lifestyle and mental health goals. They also take a holistic approach that supports your overall well-being. For example, they may recommend dietary changes because your brain needs certain nutrients to produce the chemicals that improve your mood.
